The 51st Sandy Show Saturday 19th August 2017The 51st Sandy Show of the modern era took place last Saturday (19th August), in the hall and grounds of Sandye Place Academy. The weather was kind to us this year, after a rather wet and windy few days in the week leading up to the event.

As usual, the main focus of the Show was the Horticultural, Handicraft and Culinary classes, with over 170 of these and more than 450 exhibits entered over the different Sections. It was most encouraging to see entries from new and younger exhibitors and for this year, a special class had been introduced for children of Primary School age – Class 217, a set of Red Onions to grow and display. Although there were several schools involved in the project, the actual number of entries into this special class was quite low. However, those that did enter were judged professionally and each entrant was awarded a 1st, 2nd,  or 3rd place and there were also Highly Commended places. Every entrant was also awarded a small winners medal as a reward for taking part.

During the afternoon, visitors to the Show were entertained by Punch & Judy, music from local keyboard player, Stuart Clements, as well as displays from The Raptor Foundation with their owls and Chris’s Animal Encounters showing their snakes and creepy crawlies! There were also Stalls operating both outside and inside the Hall for visitors to choose from plants, gifts, jewellery, and more. There was also a photographic display of historic images by SHRG and the new Sandy Branch of the WI were in attendance with a tombola and to promote membership.

Out back, Classic Cars were on show as well as ice cream, hot & cold food and a fairground attraction, with a Beer Tent for the older visitors.Of particular note was the Tea Tent, this year operated by Sandy Good Neighbours, a local volunteer group. The tea, coffee & cakes went down very well with everyone who came to see us and their team was very efficient, friendly and helpful. The Association is very grateful for their sterling efforts and would like to congratulate them for their excellent contribution to the smooth running of the event.

At the end of the Show, as is traditional, awards and trophies were presented to exhibitors who had been so successful with their class entries. This year, the awards were presented by The Rt. Honourable The Lord Naseby PC, himself a local resident for more than 40 years. He would have been accompanied by his wife, The Lady Ann but unfortunately she had suffered a minor stroke and had been recovering in hospital over the last couple of weeks. After the awards had all been presented, Association President’s wife, Mrs Lynda Scott, presented Lord Naseby with a small gift of an Orchid plant in appreciation and on behalf of the Association, wished The Lady Ann a speedy recovery.

Closing the Show, Association Chairman, Andrew Havergal, thanked Lord Naseby for accepting the invitation to present the awards and also to everyone on the Committee, Judges, Stewards and helpers, not forgetting all the Sponsors and Advertisers, without whose support the Show would not be possible. Finally of course to all the many visitors, who he hoped we would see at next year’s Sandy Show, which will be held on Saturday 18th August 2018. Photos from the event will be on display here in the next few days and a selection will be on display in Sandy Library during September. There is also a page on Facebook – search for The Sandy Show.
